I loaded the gas kiln with more whimsical pieces than usually this time, both in terms of glaze and form. Having been going about pottery for so long, it gets more challenging to find new avenues of discovery, and of course, it is a conscious effort to push ourselves to explore seemingly “unsafe” terrority.
Today’s update has some swirly-squidgy pieces that were left untrimmed and glazed “as is”. It’s completely un-Chinese in inspiration, and honestly it is fun for me as an outlet to be more spontaneous with the wet clay and less focused on symmetry and perfection.
The celadon pieces in this firing are more satin and blue than in previous firings. Replacing quartz with flint was small recipe fix for the matte surface of the older version that I started to find a bit dull.
Also, a new shino glaze is in use, and wow, what an untamed force that is! Some fired pieces have had to be discarded because (…you don’t want to know!), but what remains is stunning. I can’t wait for the next firing to play more with this glaze.
